Ty Lawson, who earned more than $40 million during his eight-year career as an NBA point guard, was arrested last week on a shoplifting charge involving a $34 bottle of Tito’s vodka. The Castle Rock Police Department took Lawson into custody on July 16, booking him into Douglas County Jail after the incident at a retail location in Colorado.
According to law enforcement reports, Lawson displayed signs of intoxication at the time of his arrest and was discovered sitting at a nearby restaurant after allegedly taking the vodka. During his encounter with police, he repeatedly insulted a female officer, using derogatory language that referenced her race and gender, according to the arrest report documentation.
Rather than acknowledge the incident, Lawson used social media to recast himself as a victim of discrimination. In posts on X, he claimed to have experienced racism and urged others to avoid Castle Rock, writing that “being black in America is tough” while also attacking the arresting officer’s appearance.
The 34-year-old played for the Denver Nuggets from 2009 to 2015 and was part of a national championship team at the University of North Carolina in 2009. His response to the arrest drew criticism from social media users who questioned how someone with his financial resources could claim victimhood in the situation.
