Border Patrol K9 Uncovers Nearly 100 Pounds of Prohibited Meat, Plants and Wildlife in Thailand Luggage

A detector dog working for Customs and Border Protection alerted officers to a suspicious suitcase arriving from Thailand, leading to the discovery of approximately 100 pounds of prohibited items packed inside, according to agency officials. The K9, identified as Maisy, prompted inspectors to examine the bag, which held 50 pounds of meat in various forms, 33 pounds of produce including mangoes and garlic along with bamboo and banana plants, and roughly 16 pounds of Bengal monitor lizard remains. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service subsequently assumed control of the confiscated wildlife products.

CBP agriculture specialists routinely screen international passenger luggage to intercept prohibited meat, plants and animal products that pose risks to domestic ecosystems and agricultural health. Such contraband can harbor pests, transmit diseases between species or introduce invasive organisms into American territory, officials noted. The agency highlighted the K9’s successful detection through a social media post featuring Maisy positioned behind the seized haul.

In a related enforcement action at the San Ysidro Port of Entry, California Department of Fish and Wildlife officers working alongside the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration inspected a vehicle and recovered approximately 436 fish, including rockfish, lingcod, sheephead and yellowtail. The three vehicle occupants lacked valid Mexican fishing licenses, and investigators determined they intended to sell the catch commercially within the United States. The catch was retained as evidence while authorities pursue charges related to unlawful fishing in Mexico, licensing violations and illegal importation.
