Boater’s Photo May Capture Final Moments Before Five Adults Drown in Ohio River

Marcus L. Martin, a Baptist pastor and experienced boater on Ohio’s Scioto River, observed five adults standing waist-deep in the water Sunday and felt immediate alarm. Familiar with the waterway over a decade of recreational boating, Martin recognized the location as particularly hazardous due to steep underwater slopes and abrupt drop-offs. He decided to photograph the group, an impulse he now believes captured them during their final living moments.

After floating downriver with his family to enjoy the summer evening, Martin returned to the same spot approximately two hours later and noticed the five people still in the water. The encounter prompted him to take the photograph, describing the decision as instinctive. “I don’t know what it was. I said, I just need to capture this picture,” Martin recounted to The Associated Press.

Martin considered warning the group about the area’s dangers, recalling that he had cautioned two young people at the identical location years before. However, the presence of two or three boats between his vessel and theirs prevented him from approaching without creating excessive wake. Since learning of the drownings, Martin has struggled with the decision, describing the situation as surreal.

Delaware County Sheriff Jeffrey Balzer explained that authorities believe one adult began struggling in the water, prompting the others to attempt successive rescues. All five were pulled under and perished. Recovery efforts located two bodies on Sunday and three additional bodies the following day.

Honduras confirmed Tuesday that four of the five victims were Honduran nationals. Jose Mario Pineda Dias, 33, and his wife Marina Suyapa Regalado, 28, were among those identified. The remaining couple and fifth individual have not yet been identified. An 8-year-old and 10-year-old, children of one couple, were orphaned in the incident and initially placed in Ohio state custody pending reunification with Honduran relatives.

The Honduran government announced it is coordinating with United States officials to repatriate the bodies, a process expected to require at least one month. Martin reported attempting to share his photograph with law enforcement and news media at the scene the day after the drownings, but received no response from either party.
