Actor Jason Alexander, 66, has issued a formal apology to Courtney Stodden regarding their participation in a 2012 sketch for the comedy website Funny or Die. In a statement to Fox News Digital, Alexander acknowledged that the sketch was inappropriate and expressed regret for any pain it caused Stodden, who was a minor at the time of filming.
Stodden, now an adult, publicly called out Alexander on Instagram one day before his apology, identifying him as one of the sketch’s writers. In the contentious video segment, Alexander repeatedly moved a cellphone across Stodden’s chest while making crude jokes about cellular signal, and made an additional inappropriate comment about what he would do to her after she turned 18. Stodden was 17 years old during the recording.
In her Instagram post, Stodden emphasized that as a minor she lacked the legal authority to consent to participation and that an adult—her then-husband Doug Hutchison, whom she married at 16 when he was 51—signed the contracts on her behalf. She stated that the payment from the appearance went directly to Hutchison rather than to her.
Stodden used the incident to advocate for stronger child protection measures, specifically endorsing California Assembly Bill 1267, which seeks to eliminate child marriage by establishing 18 as the minimum legal marriage age in California with no exceptions. Stodden and Hutchison separated and reconciled multiple times before divorcing, with papers filed in March 2018 and the divorce finalized in March 2020.
