The Los Angeles Angels defeated the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday night in walk-off fashion, marking their first victory when trailing after eight innings in 106 games, according to ESPN. The dramatic comeback was accompanied by hundreds of fans in right field at Angel Stadium who participated in the “tarps off” movement, removing and waving their shirts in unified celebration as the team mounted its late-game rally.
With the Angels trailing 2-1 heading into the eighth inning, the cheering section intensified through the bottom of the ninth. Jo Adell stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and the game tied, presenting the opportunity for a walk-off victory. Cardinals pitcher threw a pitch that struck Adell, allowing Zach Neto to score the winning run and deliver the dramatic finish.
The Cardinals’ fan base originally popularized the “tarps off” celebration this season, with Busch Stadium becoming a hotbed for the shirt-waving tradition. On May 15, Cardinals fans performed the chant during a game against the Kansas City Royals, prompting manager Oliver Marmol to purchase tickets for supporters who wished to participate in the movement.
Angels supporters adopted the celebration in May and have since expanded its use beyond jubilation. The right-field section has repeatedly chanted “Sell the team” as a protest against owner Arte Moreno, whose team has failed to reach the playoffs since 2014. Despite Monday’s victory, the Angels maintained a 40-61 record and remained 11 games behind the AL West division lead.
