Brown Bear Attacks Hiker Near Alaska State Park; Woman Sustains Non-Life-Threatening Injuries

A brown bear attacked a woman Saturday afternoon while she was hiking with a companion and three dogs near Bear Valley, an area adjacent to Chugach State Park in south Anchorage, according to the Anchorage Police Department and Alaska Department of Fish and Game. The victim sustained injuries that are not considered life-threatening, and she is expected to make a full recovery, authorities said Sunday.

The group was traversing an informal, user-created trail that winds steeply up a hillside through densely vegetated terrain with poor sightlines, conditions that heighten the likelihood of surprising wildlife, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game noted Monday. The bear emerged from thick alder brush, made brief physical contact with one hiker, and then departed the area, officials said.

One of the hikers’ unleashed dogs became separated during the encounter but was later discovered uninjured by another group of hikers, who returned the animal to its owners. Wildlife officials attributed the encounter partly to seasonal factors: bears actively defend and cache food sources during this period, and recent reports indicated a moose had been killed in the vicinity.

Severe wind and poor weather conditions at the time of the attack likely caught the bear off guard despite noise from the hikers and dogs, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game stated. Multiple trails throughout Anchorage remain overgrown this season with tall grass and leafy vegetation, substantially increasing surprise encounter risks.

Emergency responders from the Anchorage Fire Department, Alaska Wildlife Troopers, and Alaska State Troopers arrived at the scene. Officers hiked to locate the injured woman while firefighters evacuated her down the trail to a local hospital. During the rescue operation, police deployed a drone and monitored a nearby brown bear to ensure responder safety.
