Georgia football coach Kirby Smart disclosed that running back Dante Dowdell is being treated for severe injuries sustained in an ATV-related incident that occurred off-campus earlier this month, according to a statement to ESPN. The accident happened near Dowdell’s residence in Picayune, Mississippi, and the injuries were substantial enough to necessitate care at multiple medical facilities.
Dowdell is currently receiving treatment at Shepherd Center in Atlanta, a facility specializing in brain and spinal cord injuries. Smart indicated the player has progressed beyond the critical phase but acknowledged significant uncertainty about his recovery timeline and potential return to competition this season. “He’s out of the really tough range, but as far as his complete health and coming all the way back, I don’t know what that looks like in terms of this year,” Smart told ESPN.
Smart expressed confidence in Dowdell’s prognosis while emphasizing the family’s strength during the recovery process. The coaching staff and teammates have visited Dowdell at the facility to offer support as he begins rehabilitation.
Dowdell, a transfer portal veteran who played for Oregon in 2023 before moving to Nebraska and later Kentucky, has recorded 1,264 rushing yards on 272 carries across his college career. He accounted for 12 of his 16 total rushing touchdowns while with the Cornhuskers, ranking fifth in the Big Ten during that season.
