Crowded Field Emerges in Florida’s 27th Congressional District Race

Attorney Vincent Michael Arias is mounting a Republican primary challenge against U.S. Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar for Florida’s 27th Congressional District seat. The 68-year-old former state prosecutor and Securities and Exchange Commission enforcement attorney, who operates a private law practice in Coral Gables, contends his background in finance and government service positions him as the stronger candidate.

Arias has centered his campaign on fiscal accountability, economic strengthening, and deficit reduction. He argues that controlling the federal deficit is essential to combating inflation and lowering the cost of living for residents. Additionally, Arias advocates for improved training protocols for federal immigration enforcement agents and supports deporting individuals convicted of violent crimes while treating undocumented immigrants with greater humanity.

Salazar, 64, has represented the district since 2021 and is a former broadcast journalist born in Little Havana to Cuban immigrant parents. She has secured over $1.37 million in campaign donations, significantly outpacing her rivals. The congresswoman has championed legislation addressing border security and immigration pathways, including co-authoring the Dignity Act, which would expedite asylum processing and establish legal status options for certain undocumented immigrants.

On the Democratic side, retired television journalist Eliott Rodriguez, 70, and former federal prosecutor Robin Peguero, 40, are among candidates seeking to reclaim the seat for Democrats. Both are bilingual Cuban Americans who have criticized the rising cost of living and housing affordability crisis in Miami-Dade County. Peguero, a Harvard graduate who investigated Capitol riot crimes, has raised $820,000 in contributions.

The Democratic primary field also includes Lev Parnas, Richard Lamondin, Michael Davey, and Alexander Fornino. Key dates include a voter registration deadline of July 20, a mail-in ballot request deadline of August 6, the Democratic primary on August 18, and the general election on November 3.
