NYC Mayor Mamdani Struggles to Define Working Class in Times Interview

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani faced questions he could not decisively answer when pressed by New York Times journalist Lulu Garcia-Navarro on Saturday about how he and the Democratic Socialists of America define the working class they claim to represent. The exchange highlighted the challenge of establishing precise economic boundaries for a political concept central to his platform.

When asked to explain who qualifies as working class, Mamdani initially offered a broad definition: anyone who must work to cover basic expenses. This prompted Garcia-Navarro to test the limits of his framework, asking whether someone earning $250,000 annually would qualify under that standard.

Mamdani acknowledged he had not established a clear threshold but expanded his definition to include those struggling to afford life’s necessities. He later suggested drawing a line at approximately $1 million in annual income, stating his focus on fiscal policy centered on inclusion rather than exclusion.

Garcia-Navarro pressed further, noting that Mamdani’s framework could theoretically place a janitor and a lawyer in the same economic category. Rather than engage directly, Mamdani pivoted to discussing broader voter concerns, emphasizing that New Yorkers primarily wanted assurance they could afford a decent living through hard work.

The interview also touched on Mamdani’s stated intention to explore legal options regarding Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s potential visit to New York for September’s United Nations General Assembly, with the mayor describing Netanyahu as a war criminal warranting arrest.
