President Donald Trump joined first lady Melania Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino in a luxury suite at New York/New Jersey Stadium on Sunday to witness the World Cup final matchup between Spain and Argentina. The president’s presence was notable as the tournament concluded its month-long run across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Jennifer Hudson delivered the pregame national anthem to an 80,000-person crowd at the sold-out venue in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The acclaimed singer’s performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner” drew extended applause, with Trump visibly present during the broadcast coverage on FOX as the cheering subsided.
The opening ceremony featured additional performances and remarks before the two teams took the field. Robbie Williams performed for the gathered crowd, while actor Tom Cruise addressed attendees about the unity and togetherness demonstrated throughout the tournament across the three host nations.
The World Cup trophy made its entrance in a Louis Vuitton case, delivered by Spanish tennis champion Carlos Alcaraz. Former Argentina World Cup winner Mario Kempes then presented the trophy to the assembled spectators before the match commenced.
Argentina sought to defend its 2022 championship title won in Qatar against France, with Lionel Messi leading the squad. Spain, competing in only its second World Cup final, aimed for victory with young star Lamine Yamal and experienced midfielder Mikel Moreno anchoring the team’s hopes of capturing their second trophy since 2010.
