The North American Aerospace Defense Command reported Sunday that F-16 fighter jets intercepted several general aviation aircraft that had breached temporary flight restriction zones near Bedminster and East Rutherford, New Jersey. More than 10 aircraft entered the restricted airspace, prompting NORAD to intercept three of them directly.

During two of the interception operations, NORAD aircraft deployed flares as a visual signal to alert the pilots, potentially visible to residents in the area. The command emphasized that the flares posed no safety risk to people on the ground, noting they burn out rapidly and completely.

All general aviation aircraft were safely directed out of the restricted zone by NORAD personnel. The military agency instructed pilots that if intercepted, they should immediately contact NORAD on frequency 121.5 or 243.0 megahertz and reverse course pending further instructions on those same frequencies.

NORAD stressed the importance of pilots reviewing all relevant notices to airmen and FAA temporary flight restrictions before operating in any airspace. The agency reiterated its commitment to maintaining aerospace security while prioritizing public safety.
