Josh Kerr of Great Britain established a new men’s mile world record Saturday at the London Diamond League, crossing the finish line in 3 minutes and 42.66 seconds. The 28-year-old’s performance demolished the previous mark of 3:43.13, which Moroccan runner Hicham El Guerrouj set in Rome during 1999, ending nearly three decades of dominance in the record books.

Kerr’s victory margin proved decisive, with American Yared Nuguse finishing second in 3:45.69 and Britain’s Jake Heyward taking third place in a personal-best 3:46.73. Video footage of the momentous achievement showed Kerr raising his arms triumphantly as he crossed the finish line while spectators at London Stadium roared their approval.

The record-breaking performance fell nearly three seconds below Kerr’s previous personal best of 3:45.34 and represented the culmination of a season focused on this singular goal. Kerr had publicly pledged months earlier that he would pursue the historic mark, a bold declaration he ultimately fulfilled on the track.

Speaking with BBC Sport immediately after his victory, Kerr attributed his success to the electric stadium atmosphere and his own mental resilience during the final stretch.
