Angel Reese’s weekend took a turn for the worse Sunday when she departed Atlanta Dream’s matchup against the Chicago Sky—the franchise that traded her during the offseason—due to a left leg injury. The incident occurred early in the fourth quarter when Reese’s left leg appeared to buckle as she attempted a layup, causing her to collapse to the court, briefly recover, and then fall again before being ruled out for the remainder of the game.
The 24-year-old’s performance before the injury proved equally troubling. Reese finished with eight points and five rebounds across 20 minutes of play while shooting just 3-of-13 from the field and missing her only three-point attempt. She also recorded three turnovers, three fouls, and posted a minus-7 rating—the worst among Atlanta players—while grabbing only one defensive rebound.
Reese’s poor outing stood in stark contrast to her recent form, as she entered Sunday’s game averaging 15.7 points and a league-leading 11.8 rebounds per contest. She had recorded a double-double with 23 points and 12 rebounds against Toronto on Friday, marking her 17th double-double of the season.
Despite the subpar performance, the Dream secured a narrow 93-91 victory when guard Jordin Canada made a game-winning layup at the buzzer. Head coach Karl Smesko indicated after the game that Reese remained in good spirits but appeared to be in significant pain, prompting the decision to keep her sidelined.
The injury carries added concern given that the WNBA All-Star Game is scheduled for July 25, with the Dream not playing again until July 29. As one of the league’s marquee players alongside Caitlin Clark, Reese’s availability for the All-Star Game represents a significant concern for league officials.
