A child collecting sand on a Bimini beach Wednesday became the victim of a serious dog attack that required emergency airlift to South Florida for specialized medical care. The incident occurred in daylight hours, and investigators determined the boy was alone at the time the animals attacked him.
U.S. Coast Guard personnel met the 9-year-old at Miami following his transport from the Bahamas island. Emergency responders transported the boy on a gurney after the incident, with authorities noting the severity of his condition necessitated immediate transfer to a major medical facility.
Multiple bite wounds across the child’s legs, face, head, and arm were documented by police in the Bahamas. The injuries proved significant enough to warrant evacuation to Jackson Memorial Hospital in South Florida, where medical staff immediately began treatment.
A bystander who witnessed the attack managed to frighten the animals away from the victim. The boy subsequently returned to his family’s temporary apartment and received the first emergency call for assistance, investigators said.
At Jackson Memorial Hospital, doctors and nurses have provided ongoing care for the child, who underwent several hours of surgery following arrival.
