Illinois head coach Bret Bielema drew sharp criticism from ESPN analyst Paul Finebaum after suggesting the Southeastern Conference remains fixated on past glory. Speaking at Big Ten media days Tuesday, Bielema claimed SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey wanted to “live in 2005 forever,” contrasting what he called the Big Ten’s forward-thinking approach to college football.
Finebaum responded forcefully during ESPN’s “Get Up” program Wednesday, challenging Bielema’s credibility on SEC matters given his unsuccessful tenure at Arkansas. The analyst noted that since 2005, the SEC has won 13 national championships and characterized Bielema as routinely providing fodder for criticism at conference media events.
Bielema’s record in the SEC during his five seasons with Arkansas proved underwhelming, finishing with 11 conference victories against 29 losses. His final campaign in 2017 produced a 4-8 overall record, though it followed three consecutive winning seasons that failed to meet expectations in Fayetteville.
While the Big Ten has captured three consecutive national championships in recent years, the SEC dominated the four titles preceding that run. Finebaum emphasized that the conference’s historical success hardly suggests an organization dwelling solely on the past.
