The coffee slushie has emerged as a viral summer beverage, with social media users and home baristas embracing the trend of freezing brewed coffee and blending it into an icy refreshment. The frozen concoction offers a caffeinated alternative to traditional hot coffee, capturing the attention of coffee enthusiasts seeking cooler options during warmer months.
According to Lauren Manaker, a South Carolina-based dietitian nutritionist, the temperature of coffee does not inherently affect its nutritional profile. “It’s still just coffee, just colder and more fun for summer,” Manaker told Fox News Digital, emphasizing that the frozen format itself carries no health disadvantage compared to drinking coffee hot.
Homemade coffee slushies can actually outperform conventional frozen beverages in nutritional value, Manaker stated. Traditional slushies typically contain substantial amounts of added sugars and minimal nutritional content, whereas a coffee-based slushie provides a superior alternative when prepared thoughtfully.
The expert recommends incorporating dairy milk to enhance satiety and nutritional density. Dairy milk provides 13 essential nutrients and quality protein without added sugars, she noted, with lactose-free options available for those with sensitivities while maintaining identical nutritional benefits.
The primary nutritional risk lies not in the coffee itself but in supplementary additions, Manaker cautioned. Flavored syrups, sweetened creamers, and sugary toppings can transform a straightforward iced coffee into a dessert-like beverage, she warned.
Chandra Holt, founder of Texas-based Incredibrew, explained that coffee’s composition makes it naturally suited for freezing. Since coffee consists of approximately 95 percent water, freezing eliminates the need for added ice, creating an effective slushie base from either cold brew or cooled hot coffee.
To maximize flavor in the final product, Holt recommends using a stronger coffee brew. A more robust coffee flavor persists after milk additions, she noted, ensuring the beverage maintains its intended taste profile.
