The Miami-Dade County School Board concluded its superintendent search Wednesday by unanimously selecting Rafael Villalobos, the district’s South Region Superintendent, to lead the nation’s third-largest school system. Board members voted unanimously in favor of Villalobos following public interviews with the two finalists competing for the position.
Villalobos faced competition from Ernie Lozano, Chief Human Resources Officer for Broward County Public Schools, during the selection process. Both candidates fielded questions submitted by the general counsel’s office, with each board member taking turns posing inquiries to the finalists. A candidate required a minimum of five affirmative votes from school board members to advance in the appointment process.
The new superintendent will immediately confront significant operational challenges facing the district, including shrinking student enrollment and budgetary constraints that continue to tighten. The selection process included formal public interviews designed to evaluate each candidate’s qualifications and vision for addressing these pressing issues.
