Multiple prominent House Democrats refused to engage substantively when questioned about a sweeping policy platform unveiled by the Democratic Socialists of America that would fundamentally restructure the federal government. The DSA’s agenda includes abolishing the U.S. Senate, overhauling the executive branch, and reconstituting the federal court system through major institutional reforms.
Rep. Ro Khanna of California rejected the proposal while admitting he had not studied its details. Fellow progressive Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota deflected reporter inquiries regarding the initiative entirely.
Rep. Pete Aguilar, also of California, sidestepped engagement by citing his non-membership in DSA, arguing this distinction precluded him from offering assessments of the group’s platform documents. The agenda, branded “Workers Deserve More,” contains three main sections, with the final portion specifically proposing the elimination of the Senate in favor of a parliamentary system.
The platform extends beyond governmental restructuring to demand the complete dismantling of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, sweeping amnesty for all undocumented immigrants including those with criminal convictions, and abolition of the Defense Department. DSA has championed ICE elimination since 2018 and calls for an immediate end to all deportations.
Additional provisions seek to expand voting rights to felons and noncitizens while substantially weakening enforcement mechanisms governing immigration. These demands reflect leftward momentum increasingly evident in Democratic primary races across the country.
Aguilar downplayed concern that socialist-aligned candidates could fracture party cohesion, expressing confidence in cooperation across ideological lines within the Democratic coalition. DSA’s publication of its endorsement criteria Friday stipulates that candidates seeking the organization’s backing must actively promote the “Workers Deserve More” framework during their campaigns.
