Authorities in Washington County, Tennessee arrested a woman this week in connection with an alleged attempt to drown a child at a residential property. The incident occurred on July 15 at a home located on Cochran Road, prompting a swift law enforcement response.
Mikaylee Rae Beirne, 31, of Johnson City, now faces charges of aggravated child abuse and neglect. Washington County Sheriff Keith Sexton confirmed that deputies arrived at the scene around 5 p.m. after receiving word of a disturbance.
According to witness accounts, Beirne was in the backyard pool with several children while a second adult remained inside the residence. One child entered the home to notify the adult that Beirne was allegedly holding another child underwater against their will.
The adult immediately went to the pool and instructed Beirne to release the child. Beirne initially refused to comply, authorities said. The adult then physically separated Beirne from the child and pulled the youngster to safety.
A third adult arrived at the property and briefly spoke with Beirne prior to law enforcement arrival. Beirne subsequently left the scene before deputies could detain her.
The child sustained minor injuries and bruising during the incident but did not require hospitalization. Emergency personnel were called to assess the child’s condition.
Deputies apprehended Beirne shortly after she departed the residence. She is currently being held at the Washington County Detention Center with bond set at $50,000.
