Wisconsin Republican Sen. Ron Johnson disclosed fresh developments in his push to scrutinize Dr. Anthony Fauci’s pandemic management during an appearance on the “Ruthless” podcast released Tuesday. Johnson, who chairs the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, characterized the nation’s COVID-19 response as fundamentally flawed and said Fauci had escaped consequences for six years. The senator authored a report contending the Biden administration misled Americans throughout the health crisis.
Johnson’s comments arrived days after the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, chaired by Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, released Fauci’s personal journal entries. The documents chronicle Fauci’s rise to prominence, his interactions with Trump and Biden administration officials, and his views on the virus’s origins—a contentious matter among Republicans. The former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director is scheduled to testify before the Homeland Security Committee on Wednesday.
Republicans have long disputed Fauci’s pandemic guidance, public health directives, lockdown recommendations, and positions on the virus’s genesis. Questions about potential U.S. connections to a Chinese laboratory remain central to GOP criticism. Fauci served as director of NIAID under both Presidents Donald Trump and Joe Biden, holding the chief medical advisor role under Biden until his 2022 departure.
Johnson praised Paul’s efforts to obtain documents, noting the process remained difficult despite recent progress recovering hard drives containing information from Fauci’s devices. He suggested substantially more materials remain uncovered. The Wisconsin senator recently assumed leadership of the Senate Budget Committee following South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham’s death.
Johnson also outlined a legislative strategy targeting the Senate filibuster rule during the interview. He proposed forcing Democrats to vote explicitly against eliminating the filibuster, establishing a hardened 67-vote requirement to end the procedure rather than allowing the nuclear option. Johnson warned that unchecked Democratic control could enable passage of expansive left-wing legislation through simple party-line votes.
