New York State Assemblyman Michael Novakhov, who represents Brooklyn’s District 45, has asked the U.S. Department of Justice to launch a civil rights investigation into New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani in response to stabbing incidents on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. Novakhov made the request public during an End Jew Hatred rally in New York City on Sunday, drawing a parallel to federal scrutiny of antisemitism allegations at Columbia University.
The assemblyman announced plans to send the DOJ a formal letter requesting an investigation into state and city leadership, specifically citing what he characterized as Mamdani’s “hatred against the Jewish population of New York City and New York State.” The mayor’s office did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the allegations.
Two men sustained injuries in the Thursday afternoon attacks on the Upper West Side, a neighborhood with a substantial Jewish population. The victims, identified as Chok Sung, 57, and Moshe Grunhaus, 50, remain in stable condition, according to New York Attorney General Letitia James.
Raul Morales, 51, has been charged in connection with the stabbings, allegedly shouting “Allahu Akbar” during the assaults. The incidents occurred on Tisha B’Av, a significant day in the Jewish calendar marking the destruction of the ancient temples in Jerusalem.
Novakhov emphasized that Jewish residents should feel secure in their neighborhoods and that community members deserve answers about the attacks. Jewish leaders have recently criticized Mamdani’s characterization of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as “a war criminal” and the architect of genocide, citing concerns about the rhetoric’s impact on community safety.
