Chiefs Revive Early Training Camp Program After Disastrous 6-11 Season

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has restored an early training camp session for quarterbacks and rookies at Missouri Western State University, reversing a recent trend of skipping the three-day program. The move comes as the organization attempts to rebuild following last season’s 6-11 collapse, marked by injuries and significant roster deficiencies on both sides of the ball.

Reid acknowledged his change in approach during this week’s sessions, which have continued through heat indexes exceeding 100 degrees. “I didn’t like not doing it last year after I got done with it,” Reid said of the program. The early start provides crucial preparation for a rookie class exceeding two dozen players, the largest group the franchise will rely upon during Reid’s tenure.

Patrick Mahomes received clearance this past week to participate fully in training camp following December knee surgery to repair torn ligaments. Though Reid stated the two-time MVP will face no restrictions, the quarterback emphasized the psychological benefit of gradual integration. “You just have to build that confidence back,” Mahomes said, noting he preferred developing chemistry over several weeks rather than limited practice time before Week 1.

The Chiefs acquired Justin Fields from the Jets as veteran backup insurance and drafted LSU’s Garrett Nussmeier in the ninth round. Beyond the quarterback room, defensive back Mansoor Delane, the first cornerback selected in April’s draft, is projected to start Week 1, alongside first-round defensive tackle Peter Woods and pass rusher R Mason Thomas.

Woods expressed gratitude for the extended preparation time, stating the opportunity to mesh with veterans before the full roster arrived held significant value. “Not everyone gets a chance to do that,” Woods said of the early camp experience.
