Quarter-Million Evacuated as Massive Wildfire Threatens Bordeaux Wine Region in Southwest France

A sprawling wildfire in southwest France has forced the evacuation of more than 250,000 residents as flames advance toward the Bordeaux region, one of the world’s most celebrated wine-producing areas. Authorities ordered an additional 55,000 people to leave their homes overnight Sunday from communities south of Bordeaux, adding to the already massive displacement triggered by conditions of extreme heat, strong winds, and severe drought since midweek.

The uncontrolled fire has consumed an estimated 42,000 hectares—approximately 162 square miles, or roughly four times the area of Paris—in the Gironde region. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez warned that the blaze had grown “extremely virulent and unpredictable,” generating its own wind patterns and advancing erratically toward the Bordeaux metropolitan area before conditions stabilized somewhat by Sunday evening.

Officials have mobilized over 2,500 firefighters alongside 18 aircraft and helicopters to combat the advancing flames, which came within 9 miles of Bordeaux city limits and prompted a partial closure of major highways in and out of the region. France has also deployed 1,500 soldiers for vegetation clearing and firebreak construction, while multiple European nations have dispatched additional aircraft and firefighting personnel to assist.

The Bordeaux fire is one of several major blazes currently burning across France, with a separate wildfire in the neighboring Landes region forcing 36,000 evacuations and fires in the Mediterranean-coast Var region displacing nearly 3,000 others. Neighboring Spain faces a comparable emergency, with authorities evacuating approximately 116,000 people as fires rage across the Valencia region and areas west of Madrid, including one fatal fire in a Valencia suburb that marked Spain’s first wildfire death in the current wave.
