Knicks Star Karl-Anthony Towns Attends Jewish Youth Fundraiser Amid NBA Split on Israel Rhetoric

Towns expressed gratitude to attendees, stating it represented “an honor to be able to play for y’all and represent what this city is.” The organization presented Towns with a memento tied to its anti-bullying initiative.

Towns’ public show of support for the Jewish community comes as other prominent NBA figures have taken divergent stances on recent controversial statements. Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving and San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama both engaged with a social media post from New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani in which he labeled Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a “war criminal” and called for federal law enforcement to apprehend him should he visit New York City.

The timing of Towns’ attendance reflects escalating concerns about antisemitic incidents throughout New York City. Data compiled by the New York Police Department for 2026 reveals that antisemitic hate crimes constitute between 55 and 60 percent of all documented hate crimes in the city, despite Jewish residents representing roughly 10 percent of the population.

During the first quarter of 2026 alone, the NYPD recorded 78 antisemitic hate crime cases among 143 total confirmed incidents, representing 55 percent of all hate crimes during that period. Jewish organizational leaders and elected officials have increasingly criticized Mayor Mamdani, asserting that his inflammatory language regarding Israel and threats against Netanyahu have contributed to the hostile climate facing Jewish New Yorkers.
