Maine Democrats to Nominate Senate Challenger Against Collins After Primary Winner Exits Race

More than 600 Democratic delegates will convene in Bangor on Saturday to select a replacement nominee for Maine’s U.S. Senate race against five-term Republican incumbent Susan Collins. The party moved to find a successor after June primary winner Graham Platner stepped aside following allegations of sexual assault, which he has denied.

Troy Jackson, a fifth-generation logger and former Maine state Senate president from rural northern Maine, has emerged as the leading contender for the nomination. Jackson previously managed U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders’ 2016 Maine campaign and has secured commitments from approximately 480 of the 601 delegates expected to vote at the convention, according to his campaign.

Jackson’s only remaining opponent is Saundra Pelletier, a women’s health company executive who faces substantial disadvantages against the politically established Jackson. The Maine Democratic Party completed the delegate selection process through county party meetings held last weekend and must finalize a new nominee by Monday under state law requirements.

The Senate contest carries significant national implications, as Democrats view Maine as their strongest opportunity to flip a Republican-held seat this cycle. However, Jackson must overcome substantial hurdles, including Collins’ $16 million fundraising advantage and his own need to build name recognition with independent voters who comprise a substantial portion of Maine’s electorate.

Collins has characterized Jackson as overly radical for Maine voters, labeling him a “Bernie Bro” and suggesting his positions align with socialism. Jackson has championed progressive policies including Medicare for All and has called for abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
