U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents removed Daniel Ogama Adongo, 37, a former linebacker for the Indianapolis Colts, from the country this month following a lengthy history of criminal arrests and an expired visa. Adongo, originally from Kenya, had overstayed his visa since 2016 and faced mandatory detention under the Laken Riley Act, which was signed into law by President Donald Trump in 2024.
The former athlete was convicted of criminal mischief with damage in 2020, resulting in a one-year jail sentence. His arrest record also includes charges of felony intimidation, battery and disorderly conduct, according to immigration officials. An immigration judge ordered his removal in March, with the deportation carried out on June 20.
Adongo initially entered the United States as a recruited rugby player and spent two seasons with the Colts between 2013 and 2015. ICE Chicago Assistant Field Office Director Douglas Thompson stated in a comment that “this dangerous individual was clearly a threat to the community, which is now safer since he’s been removed,” adding that those who violate immigration law face equal accountability regardless of professional status.
ICE emphasized that nearly 70 percent of its arrests involve individuals charged or convicted of crimes in the United States, with the agency reporting more than 3 million removals to date. Officials reiterated their commitment to identifying and deporting individuals in the country illegally.
