Joel Embiid’s 2014 social media recruitment pitch to LeBron James has finally borne fruit. Twelve years after posting a casual invitation on social media asking James to join Philadelphia, the four-time NBA champion and all-time leading scorer has agreed to sign with the 76ers, transforming the franchise’s championship aspirations overnight.
James will join the 76ers on a two-year deal worth approximately $3.9 million annually at the veteran’s minimum. His arrival alongside reigning NBA MVP Embiid, All-Stars Tyrese Maxey and Jaylen Brown, and promising second-year guard VJ Edgecombe has immediately elevated Philadelphia’s championship odds and sent shockwaves throughout the Eastern Conference, including defending champion New York.
The 76ers engineered one of the offseason’s most dramatic transformations by firing team president Daryl Morey and installing longtime Cleveland executive Mike Gansey. Gansey’s first major move was acquiring Brown from Boston in a trade that netted the 2024 NBA Finals MVP and the league’s fourth-leading scorer last season.
James, who turns 42 in December, averaged 60 games last season due to injuries. At 40 years old, he remains formidable enough to elevate any roster from the league’s middle tier into genuine contention, executives believe. The franchise has not won an NBA championship since 1983, when Julius Erving was still the team’s centerpiece.
Philadelphia’s acquisition spree represents a dramatic contrast to the Eastern Conference’s other top contenders. The defending champion Knicks have largely maintained their roster, while the Miami Heat acquired Giannis Antetokounmpo from Milwaukee in an attempt to build another championship roster around Bam Adebayo.
James becomes the most accomplished player ever to wear a 76ers uniform and could etch his legacy further by becoming the first player to win NBA titles with four franchises. He previously won championships with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat and Los Angeles Lakers.
The Cavaliers, James’ original team, face uncertainty after he spurned a potential sentimental return. The franchise must now hope to retain 36-year-old James Harden while developing young pieces including Jarrett Allen, Evan Mobley and Donovan Mitchell. Coach Nick Nurse, who turned 59 on the day James signed, received the ultimate professional gift to begin his tenure in Philadelphia.
