Weijia Jiang, CBS News correspondent and president of the White House Correspondents’ Association, outlined plans for the relocated dinner Friday while rejecting notions that the organization would be cowed by an armed incident that disrupted the April event. Speaking to People magazine Thursday, Jiang stated the gathering represents a chance to demonstrate journalistic resolve rather than allow disturbing imagery to define the year.
The rescheduled dinner reflects substantial operational changes negotiated with the Secret Service and a private security contractor. The event has been moved from the Washington Hilton to the Waldorf Astoria ballroom, with attendance reduced from 2,600 to approximately 680 guests and entry restricted to a single controlled access point.
Jiang stressed the symbolic importance of holding the dinner during 2026, coinciding with America’s 250th anniversary and providing an opportunity to underscore the First Amendment’s role in American democracy. She noted the compressed timeline could have justified postponement but emphasized that the current moment makes the celebration of press freedoms particularly meaningful.
President Donald Trump is expected to attend as the featured speaker, marking his first appearance at the dinner as president. Additional performers include mentalist Oz Pearlman. The WHCA will present a service award to the Secret Service member injured in the April shooting, while Washington Hilton staff will also receive recognition.
Despite Trump’s anticipated presence, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio will not attend due to prior commitments. Some journalists have criticized the decision to include Trump, urging the organization to challenge the administration, but Jiang framed the dinner as an effort to rebuild fractured relations between press and government.
