Sen. Tina Smith of Minnesota threw her support behind Democratic Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed on Thursday, calling him “a fighter” in a move that underscores deepening divisions within the party ahead of the August 4 primary. El-Sayed responded with a statement thanking the senator for her backing and pledging to advance her work on reproductive rights and women’s health.
The endorsement places Smith alongside a notable roster of progressive figures backing El-Sayed, including Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York. Sanders has framed the race as a contest between El-Sayed and “the billionaire class,” dismissing the notion that his preferred candidate faces a significant challenge from his opponent.
El-Sayed is competing against U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens of Michigan in the Democratic primary to succeed retiring Sen. Gary Peters. Peters has endorsed Stevens, stating in a written statement that the congresswoman has been a dedicated partner for the state during his eighteen years of service and is ready to fight for Michigan on day one.
Stevens has also secured backing from former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California, signaling establishment Democratic support for her candidacy. On the Republican side, former Rep. Mike Rogers, who has President Donald Trump’s endorsement, faces no primary opposition.
