Scientists have identified a protective mechanism within the APOE2 gene that shields brain cells from damage and deterioration associated with aging and Alzheimer’s disease. The gene appears to function by minimizing DNA damage in neural tissue while simultaneously enhancing neurons’ ability to recover from biological stress, according to new research findings.
The discovery presents researchers with a blueprint for developing therapeutic interventions designed to replicate APOE2’s protective properties in individuals carrying genetic variants that elevate their risk for Alzheimer’s disease.
