Republican Iowa gubernatorial nominee Zach Lahn contends that his Democratic opponent is presenting a false image to Iowa voters because progressive policies lack public support. During a Friday interview on the “Ruthless Podcast,” Lahn claimed Democrats must “pretend to be somebody they’re not” when their actual agenda fails to resonate with constituents.
Lahn highlighted endorsements that Rob Sand, his Democratic challenger, has received from national progressive figures including Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz. The Republican candidate, who operates as a farmer and businessman, argued his campaign addresses agricultural concerns in ways that reflect genuine voter priorities in the state.
Lahn won Iowa’s Republican primary in early June after defeating Rep. Randy Feenstra, who carried President Donald Trump’s endorsement. Trump subsequently backed Lahn. The candidate received the first endorsement from Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s Make America Healthy Again PAC for his healthcare policy positions.
Sand’s campaign countered that Lahn is a “career political operative” disconnected from Iowa communities. The Democratic campaign noted Sand has secured backing from over 2,400 registered Republicans and 6,000 no-party voters based on his tenure as State Auditor and consistent community engagement.
Fox News projections currently favor Democrats in the Iowa race, though no Democrat has won the governor’s office since 2006. The state has supported Trump in three consecutive presidential elections.
