White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt publicly endorsed Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham on Thursday, following the athlete’s recent statements opposing transgender participation in women’s sports competitions. Leavitt told journalists that Cunningham’s position reflected common sense and aligned with broad public opinion on the contentious issue.
“Men should not be playing in women’s sports. It’s completely ludicrous that anyone could support that,” Leavitt stated. She characterized the backlash Cunningham received from Democratic and progressive figures as evidence of being disconnected from mainstream American views, describing the matter as an “80/20 issue” among voters.
Cunningham ignited the ongoing cultural debate Tuesday when she disclosed her stance to ESPN during an interview. The Indiana Fever player clarified that her comments were not motivated by animosity toward transgender individuals, stating she aims to extend compassion while also prioritizing athlete safety in youth sports settings.
