Democratic Congressional Candidate in Michigan Backed Green Energy Policies While Accepting Nearly $60K From Utility Groups

Sean McCann, seeking the Democratic nomination to challenge Republican Rep. Bill Huizenga in Michigan’s 4th Congressional District, has accepted at least $57,600 in campaign contributions from major energy companies while simultaneously championing Green New Deal policies expected to boost utility expenses. The contributions came from DTE Energy PAC and CMS Energy Corporation Employees for Better Government, raising questions about potential conflicts between his financial backing and legislative positions on energy matters.

McCann’s background includes service as Kalamazoo city commissioner from 1999 to 2008, followed by stints in the Michigan House from 2011 to 2015 and the Michigan Senate from 2019 to 2023, where he chaired the Senate Energy and Environment Committee. During his tenure, he voted to support SB 271 in 2023, Michigan’s sweeping clean energy overhaul signed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer that mandates utilities achieve 100% clean energy by 2040, with an interim requirement of 50% renewable energy by 2030.

Policy analysts from the Mackinac Center estimated the legislation could cost Michigan residents $386 billion through 2050, translating to an average annual increase of $2,746 per customer or approximately $228.83 monthly. The center also warned the transition could heighten blackout risks, projecting potential outages lasting up to 61 consecutive hours during winter months when electricity demand peaks.

McCann voted against a separate amendment to SB 502 that would have prevented utility rate increases on residential customers through 2040. When pressed about the apparent contradiction between his energy industry funding and support for costly environmental mandates, McCann’s campaign deflected by noting his opponent, Huizenga, has received even larger contributions from utilities, totaling over $250,000 since 2010.

McCann praised the clean energy bill as essential environmental protection legislation upon its passage. The Democratic primary in Michigan is scheduled for August 4, with the general election in November.
