Arizona Cardinals tight end Travis Vokolek announced his retirement Wednesday at age 28, bringing his three-year professional football career to an end following medical advice regarding a serious neck injury. The injury occurred during a game against the Indianapolis Colts when Vokolek was blocking on a kickoff play and landed awkwardly after contact with a defensive player, requiring him to be removed from the field on a stretcher.
Vokolek disclosed his decision through a social media post, stating that consultations with doctors and neurologists over the preceding weeks led medical professionals to recommend his immediate retirement from professional football. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to pursue his childhood ambition of playing at the sport’s highest level and credited the Cardinals organization, coaching staff, and trainers for their support during his recovery process.
The tight end came to the NFL as an undrafted free agent signing with the Baltimore Ravens in 2023 after playing college football at Rutgers and Nebraska. He joined the Cardinals in December 2023 and appeared in eight games during his tenure with the team, though his offensive role remained limited throughout his tenure.
