Man Arrested After DUI Crash Kills Occupant in Coral Springs

Police in Coral Springs have arrested a 42-year-old driver in connection with a fatal traffic collision that occurred Monday evening at West Sample Road and Turtle Run Boulevard. The crash resulted in the death of a vehicle occupant who was transported to a hospital but could not be saved.

Joseph Adam Callejo of Margate was operating a 2017 blue Toyota Tundra at excessive speed westbound on West Sample Road when he switched lanes and struck the rear of a stationary 2022 silver Toyota that was waiting at a red light, authorities said. The impact occurred just after 4:45 p.m., prompting emergency responders to transport the injured occupant to Broward Health North, where the person was pronounced deceased.

Officers observed multiple signs of impairment after Callejo exited his truck, including bloodshot and watery eyes, slurred speech, stuttering, loss of balance, and an odor of alcohol on his breath. The suspect refused to cooperate with law enforcement, declining both to answer questions and perform field sobriety tests.

A warrant was issued to obtain a blood sample at the hospital, with results later forwarded to the Coral Springs Police Department Evidence Unit. Callejo faces charges including DUI manslaughter, vehicular homicide, DUI with property or personal injury, first-offense DUI, DUI refusal to submit to chemical testing, and reckless driving.
