Republican candidates bearing President Donald Trump’s endorsement decisively won multiple contests in Arizona’s primary elections Tuesday night, underscoring his continued grip on the party’s direction. The victories spanned races from the governor’s office down to congressional seats, cementing Trump’s influence over the state’s GOP machinery heading into the general election.
Rep. Andy Biggs, the former House Freedom Caucus chair who secured Trump’s backing, claimed the Republican gubernatorial nomination by a commanding margin exceeding 50 points over Rep. David Schweikert and other GOP contenders. Biggs will face Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs, the former Arizona Secretary of State who won her primary unopposed and narrowly defeated Republican nominee Kari Lake in their previous matchup four years ago.
In Arizona’s 1st Congressional District, former NFL kicker Jay Feely won the GOP primary after receiving Trump’s “complete and total endorsement” in the campaign’s final weeks. Feely will advance to face former state Representative Amish Shah, who held an early lead of nearly 9 points in the Democratic primary contest.
Mark Lamb, the ex-Pinal County Sheriff and another Trump-backed candidate, captured the Republican primary in Arizona’s 5th Congressional District, a heavily Republican seat Biggs is vacating. Lamb’s nomination sets him up as the likely favorite in the general election despite earlier campaign scrutiny over allegations of inappropriate messages to women outside his marriage.
Meanwhile, Democrats averted a significant leftist primary victory when Rep. Greg Stanton defeated progressive challenger Kai Newkirk in Arizona’s 4th District. The result provided establishment Democrats relief after progressive challengers have increasingly pressured incumbents nationwide over issues spanning Israel policy, immigration enforcement, healthcare and corporate influence.
