New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill revealed Tuesday that state officials have purged approximately 6,600 noncitizens from the voting register who would have been permitted to participate in the 2024 presidential election. The Democratic governor attributed the removal to a “serious software error” within New Jersey’s Motor Vehicle System that resulted in thousands of ineligible individuals gaining voter registration status between June 2023 and June 2024.
During a press conference, Sherrill explained that the software malfunction registered certain individuals despite their explicit indication of noncitizen status and voting ineligibility. The error persisted for one year before corrections were implemented in June 2024, she said.
State preliminary findings indicate that fewer than 400 of the improperly registered individuals actually cast ballots. These voters were distributed throughout New Jersey, with the majority showing no party registration, though some had registered as Democrats or Republicans, according to officials.
Sherrill announced that she initiated an immediate investigation upon learning of the issue last Wednesday and directed the removal of all ineligible registrants. The state’s Division of Elections continues efforts to purge noncitizens from voting rolls.
The governor criticized the circumstances in a social media statement, saying she was “appalled by the reckless failures” that enabled the situation. While noting the error occurred before her tenure, Sherrill pledged to implement safeguards and ensure accountability moving forward.
Sherrill also attacked President Donald Trump for what she characterized as efforts to undermine electoral confidence through false claims about past election results and election security defunding.
The New Jersey disclosure follows Trump’s announcement last week that the Department of Homeland Security identified approximately 250,000 noncitizens registered to vote across New Jersey, California, Nevada and Pennsylvania. DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin sent letters Friday to state election officials outlining the findings and requesting verification collaboration before any action.
According to DHS estimates, California may have as many as 190,832 noncitizen registrants, followed by New Jersey with 35,152, Nevada with 15,903 and Pennsylvania with 14,576. The department identified specific matches—including names, dates of birth, addresses and Social Security numbers—for 81,336 California registrants, 19,497 New Jersey registrants, 8,576 Nevada registrants and 8,594 Pennsylvania registrants in federal immigration records. DHS characterized the assessment as preliminary.
