Soccer’s governing body announced Monday it has initiated a formal disciplinary inquiry into physical confrontations that occurred following Spain’s 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final at New Jersey/New York Stadium. Among the most notable incidents, Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes was captured on video appearing to grab Spain defender Eric García by the neck before additional pushing and tripping ensued on the pitch. FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee formally appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to examine potential violations of the FIFA Disciplinary Code stemming from the post-match disorder, according to an official statement from the organization citing article 36 of its governing rules.
Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni was observed being physically restrained by a Spanish player while directing heated remarks toward opposing personnel. Defender Nicolás Otamendi engaged in verbal exchanges with several Spain players, including team captain Rodri, before the confrontation was separated by officials.
Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala was seen approaching Spain winger Dani Olmo and striking him on the jaw before the two were pulled apart by stadium personnel. Both Molina and Ayala face expected disciplinary scrutiny as part of the ongoing investigation.
In remarks following the defeat, Scaloni acknowledged the loss and emphasized respect for the outcome. “We are gracious in victory, and we must be so in defeat,” Scaloni said through ESPN. “We accept the loss; we gave everything.”
