Funeral for Black Teen Found Dead After July 4 Boat Trip Features Rev. Sharpton, Civil Rights Leaders

Nolan Xavier Wells, an 18-year-old whose body was discovered following a July 4 excursion to Horn Island off the Gulf Coast, will be laid to rest Monday in his native Ocean Springs, Mississippi. The service will be presided over by Rev. Al Sharpton, with prominent civil rights lawyer Ben Crump delivering remarks on behalf of the family.

Wells’ mother, Christine Wonsley, characterized her son as a “bright light” and “sensitive soul,” emphasizing that the funeral would celebrate rather than mourn his memory. She said the gathering would reflect her son’s spirit and avoid dwelling on grief, instead honoring the person he was.

The teenager, who was Black, joined a group of white high school friends on the island outing but did not return with them that evening. His remains surfaced two days later in waters adjacent to the island, prompting Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter to launch an investigation that continues.

Sheriff Ledbetter stated that Wells’ companions indicated he chose to remain on the island and expected to secure alternate transportation. However, attorney Crump contends a witness claims Wells intended to depart with the group, contradicting law enforcement’s account.

Crump’s independent investigation has identified potential discrepancies, including allegedly deleted messages from a phone recovered with Wells’ friends. The prosecutor agreed to present investigative findings to a grand jury upon completion.

Wells, a wide receiver for Southwest Mississippi Community College’s football program in Summit, aspired to reach Division I athletics. Coach Les George remembered him as exceptionally personable and approachable with teammates and staff.

High-profile supporters have mobilized around the case. Actor Tyler Perry is underwriting funeral expenses, while former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick is financing an independent autopsy. Filmmaker Spike Lee publicly backed the family at recent proceedings.

Members of the Congressional Black Caucus issued a joint statement demanding transparent, independent examination of the circumstances, noting substantial unanswered questions persist surrounding Wells’ death.
