Chicago Cubs center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong delivered a performance Saturday that may have clinched National League MVP honors, and Cubs legend Sammy Sosa appeared to have foreseen the explosive afternoon. The 24-year-old’s three-home-run display came during the Cubs’ dominant 17-5 victory over the Cincinnati Reds at Wrigley Field.
Crow-Armstrong’s offensive onslaught began immediately when he launched his eighth lead-off home run of the season to open play. A second blast down the right-field line in the bottom of the second extended Chicago’s advantage to 6-2, setting the stage for his third and final long ball in the seventh inning to center field, marking his first three-home-run game as a professional.
The standout finished his day with four hits in six at-bats while driving in six runs, cementing a landmark performance. The Cubs organization added extra significance to Saturday’s contest by honoring its 150th Anniversary Team before first pitch, with Sosa among the honored guests.
During that pregame ceremony, Sosa and Crow-Armstrong shared a brief conversation that proved prophetic. “Sammy Sosa told me I was gonna hit three, and I hit three,” Crow-Armstrong revealed during his postgame interview, adding credence to the Cubs legend’s apparent foresight.
The performance strengthened Crow-Armstrong’s MVP candidacy considerably over Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani. With 36 home runs and 32 stolen bases, the Cubs center fielder remains positioned to potentially achieve a 40-40 season while pursuing franchise MVP history, where he would become the 10th honoree if successful.
