Love Takes Over Play-Calling Duties in Packers’ Preseason Victory Over Cardinals

Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love took on an unconventional role during the team’s final preseason contest Friday night, stepping into the offensive coordinator position for the second half. Love directed the play-calling as the Packers defeated the Arizona Cardinals 42-38, demonstrating considerable composure in the process. Head coach Matt LaFleur made the decision spontaneously, approaching Love before kickoff with minimal preparation.

LaFleur explained the impromptu arrangement, saying he asked Love on the sideline if he would be willing to handle the second-half duties. “I just went up to him. It’s not like he had time to prep. I was just like, ‘Hey, you want to call the second half?’ He said, ‘Sure. Yeah, I’ll do it.’ And he did it and he did an outstanding job,” LaFleur recalled. The decision proved decisive as Green Bay mounted an 11-point comeback in the final 3½ minutes to secure the victory.

LaFleur praised Love’s demeanor throughout the contest, particularly during pivotal moments. “That was pretty cool, to hear his demeanor on the headset and how calm, cool and collected he was throughout the entire game, especially during those critical moments,” the coach said. Offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich called plays during the first half before handing responsibilities to Love.

Third-string quarterback Kyle McCord played the entire game with Love and backup Tyrod Taylor resting. McCord completed 22 of 35 passes for 226 yards and four touchdowns, demonstrating strong performance in his bid for the 53-man roster. The sixth-round pick from 2025, who spent last season on the Philadelphia Eagles’ practice squad, acknowledged the uncertainty ahead. “It’s out of my control at this point. I did everything that I could’ve to make a case for myself. And so now we just wait and see,” McCord said.
