Yoshinobu Yamamoto earned his first regular-season complete game in 66 major league starts, leading the Los Angeles Dodgers to an 8-2 victory over the New York Yankees in Sunday’s opening contest of a day-night doubleheader at Yankee Stadium. The right-hander allowed just four hits while striking out seven batters without issuing a walk, throwing 69 of 102 pitches for strikes in a dominant performance that came after Saturday night’s rainout.
The Dodgers’ offense exploded in the eighth inning, sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring five runs off Yankees reliever Jake Bird to put the game out of reach. Shohei Ohtani contributed an RBI double in the third and an RBI single in the eighth, while Freddie Freeman added an RBI single and sacrifice fly, and Tommy Edman delivered a two-run single from the No. 9 spot in the batting order.
Additional offensive contributions came from Teoscar Hernández with an RBI double and Andy Pages, whose RBI double in the fifth inning chased Yankees starter Cam Schlittler (9-6) with one out in the frame. Yamamoto improved to 10-6, outdueling Schlittler in a matchup between All-Star pitchers.
The defending World Series champion Dodgers have now won the first two games of their three-game set in the Bronx, their first visit since capturing the 2024 title. Los Angeles improved to a major league-best 63-36, while the Yankees fell to 54-44 and dropped to 18-21 without captain Aaron Judge, who remains sidelined with a fractured rib.
Yamamoto retired his first nine batters before allowing Trent Grisham’s solo home run in the fourth inning on a 2-0 fastball. The Yankees also struggled defensively in the sun, with outfielder Pages losing a flyball to center field that led to a gift double for Jazz Chisholm Jr., and New York also lost two additional popups that fell untouched.
