The U.S. Department of Education is launching a coordinated campaign to convince parents that authority over K-12 schooling must shift to individual states rather than remain under federal jurisdiction. Department officials point to $3 trillion in cumulative federal spending paired with standardized test results showing only 30 percent of students demonstrate proficiency in reading and mathematics, according to statements provided to Fox News Digital on Tuesday.
Education Secretary Linda McMahon has undertaken a 50-state tour to communicate directly with families about the administration’s education restructuring agenda. McMahon emphasized that the initiative represents “the largest expansion of education freedom in American history” and aims to restore parental involvement in schooling decisions while reducing Washington’s oversight role in curriculum and school operations.
As part of the broader strategy, McMahon and other department officials conducted a series of radio interviews over the previous two weeks to reach millions of parents with messaging about what the administration characterizes as a fundamental redesign of American education policy focused on parental rights and state autonomy.
President Donald Trump held a Rose Garden event Monday featuring students, parents and educators where he reiterated his commitment to expanding school choice options and removing what he termed “far-left extremism” from classrooms. The administration is promoting the Education Freedom Tax Credit, scheduled to launch January 1, 2027, which will provide dollar-for-dollar tax credits up to $1,700 for taxpayers who donate to scholarship-granting organizations.
The Department of Education has established nine agency partnerships over the past year to downsize its operations and transfer responsibilities to other federal departments. A recent inter-agency agreement transferred student loan operations to the Treasury Department, representing what officials described as a significant step toward reducing the education agency’s scope.
