Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker released a black-and-white social media video Monday that quickly became a target for online critics and political opponents. The clip, which accumulated more than 1 million views, shows Pritzker making exaggerated facial expressions while claiming superiority in an “aura-farming contest,” a slang term for pursuing social credibility through deliberate actions.
The governor accompanied the video with the phrase “governor-maxxing,” using internet slang to suggest he was optimizing his image. Political commentators and conservative figures swiftly responded with disparaging remarks about both the video’s content and Pritzker’s appearance. White House deputy assistant Kaelan Dorr criticized the engagement the post received, while conservative commentator Matt Walsh made pointed observations about the governor’s physical appearance.
Social media users adopted Pritzker’s “maxxing” phrasing to launch their own critiques, with critics accusing him of “property-tax-maxxing” and “gas-tax-hike-maxxing” in reference to his fiscal policies. Brian Costin, a staffer at a right-leaning Illinois advocacy organization, compiled a lengthy list of policy-related jabs using the same format. Others employed weight-related wordplay to mock the governor’s appearance.
RealClearPolitics president Tom Bevan characterized the video as among Pritzker’s most awkward social media attempts to date. Pritzker’s office has not yet provided comment to news outlets regarding the video’s reception.
