Angel Reese etched her name into WNBA history Monday night, hauling in 26 rebounds as the Atlanta Dream defeated the Los Angeles Sparks 78-71. The performance surpassed the previous single-game record of 24 rebounds, a mark Chamique Holdsclaw established in 2003. Additionally, Reese’s 20th rebound of the evening moved her ahead of A’ja Wilson for the most rebounds in a single WNBA season.
The milestone achievement was tempered by circumstances surrounding the final moments of the contest. With Atlanta leading 76-69 and just 20 seconds remaining, Dream guard Jordin Canada sent an outlet pass to an unmarked Reese in the frontcourt. Rather than run down the clock to secure the victory, Reese converted an uncontested layup, pushing her point total to 11 and extending her double-double streak to 27 consecutive games.
Reese finished 4-for-14 from the field, with seven missed layup attempts and five blocked shots—four by Sparks forward Cameron Brink. The late basket did not contribute to her rebounding records and appeared designed solely to pad her scoring statistics after the game’s outcome had been decided. Her teammates appeared complicit in the play, orchestrating the possession to ensure she received an opportunity to score.
This marks the second instance in recent months where Reese’s pursuit of statistical milestones has extended beyond the pivotal moments of competition. The pattern has drawn scrutiny regarding the legitimacy of her record-setting achievements and raises questions about sportsmanship at the professional level.
