Abdul El-Sayed, a 41-year-old progressive Michigan Democrat and candidate for U.S. Senate backed by the Democratic Socialists of America, appeared on “Jesse Watters Primetime” to address his previous criticism of professional football. The discussion centered on El-Sayed’s earlier characterization of the NFL as fundamentally racist and his defense of former quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s career in the league.
El-Sayed has previously attacked football for enabling “toxic masculinity,” “bro culture,” and fostering “racism, misogyny, and homophobia.” During his appearance, he reiterated support for Kaepernick, stating the quarterback deserved additional seasons in the NFL and asserting he remains a capable player despite lost time away from the sport.
When Watters pressed El-Sayed to defend his claim that the NFL is racist, the candidate shifted the conversation to ticket pricing and accessibility for fans. El-Sayed emphasized that most people cannot afford to attend games, particularly in Michigan where residents have limited options to watch their home team play in stadiums.
Watters directly confronted El-Sayed for avoiding the original question about racism, noting the candidate had called the NFL racist previously but was now discussing only affordability concerns. El-Sayed maintained his focus on economic access rather than engaging with the racism question directly.
