Mariska Hargitay has revealed she seriously contemplated departing “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” during its 25th season after spending more than two decades portraying Detective Olivia Benson. The actress, who joined the NBC procedural when it premiered in 1999, expressed concerns to Variety that the iconic role threatened to overshadow the breadth of her professional abilities.

In discussing her doubts with fellow actor Julianna Margulies, who departed “ER” after six seasons, Hargitay recalled her anxiety about becoming typecast. “I’ve got to leave the show too. I don’t want people to think I’m a one-trick pony,” she told Margulies, who offered candid perspective in response: “Sweetheart, that ship’s sailed.”

Despite her creative frustrations stemming from the demanding production schedule, Hargitay ultimately chose to remain with the series after opportunities expanded her professional scope. She cited the ability to simultaneously film a motion picture, perform in a stage production during hiatuses, and host the Emmy Awards as key factors in her decision to continue with the show.

Hargitay has praised “Law & Order” creator and executive producer Dick Wolf’s vision and writing quality in recent remarks. Since becoming an executive producer in 2016, she has remained central to the franchise, which has spawned seven spinoffs including “Criminal Intent,” “Trial by Jury,” “LA,” “UK,” “True Crime,” and “Organized Crime.”

“SVU” achieved a historic milestone in 2019 when it became the longest-running live-action television series in American history, solidifying Hargitay’s place in entertainment. The Emmy-winning performer has maintained her starring role and expanded responsibilities throughout the show’s unprecedented run.
