Federal authorities are intensifying enforcement against birth tourism networks in a coordinated international campaign that has already resulted in hundreds of visa revocations. State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott confirmed to Fox News Digital that the initiative operates under President Donald Trump’s direction and involves coordination with agencies and law enforcement partners across multiple countries. The effort aims to dismantle operations where individuals travel to the United States primarily to give birth and secure citizenship for their children.
Birth tourism involves misrepresenting travel purposes on visa applications to gain entry to the country for childbirth, a practice that has evolved into a commercial enterprise offering fraudulent services. Facilitators openly market these schemes to prospective clients seeking to circumvent immigration law, with some businesses explicitly advertising automatic citizenship guarantees in promotional materials. Beyond the initial fraud at visa processing, the schemes often extend to coaching participants on evading medical bill payments, shifting costs to American taxpayers.
The State Department established a Birth Tourism Prevention Task Force on August 12, which employs real-time analysis of travel patterns and visa holder movements to identify suspicious activity. Consular officers worldwide work with international partners to detect indicators of birth tourism networks, including patterns such as repeated partner visits during late pregnancy stages. Officials have already revoked more than 750 visas connected to suspected birth tourism activity, with expectations that the figure will rise substantially.
Trump administration officials characterize the crackdown as essential to protecting citizenship integrity and preventing the commercialization of American birthright benefits. Officials assert that visa security represents a critical component of broader border enforcement efforts, contrasting current administration policies with predecessors they say enabled immigration system abuse.
