New Jersey’s 7th District Emerges as Pivotal Battleground for House Control

House Speaker Mike Johnson has identified New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District as one of the GOP’s three most critical races this election cycle, underscoring the seat’s potential to determine congressional control. The district, which encompasses Trump’s Bedminster golf course, represents a narrow political battleground where party leaders are pouring resources ahead of November’s vote. Johnson emphasized the district’s importance during a recent event at Hawke Point Golf Club, declaring that Republicans would successfully defend their incumbent despite Democratic investment in the race.

Republican Rep. Tom Kean Jr. seeks a third term representing the suburban New Jersey district, which Trump carried by just two points in 2024 before Democratic Gov. Mikie Sherrill won the same margin in 2025. The razor-thin partisan split has positioned the seat as potentially decisive for House majorities, given the limited number of truly competitive districts remaining nationwide. Democrats have nominated Rebecca Bennett, a former Navy helicopter pilot, to challenge Kean in what both parties view as a winnable contest.

Control of the House hinges on outcomes in seats like New Jersey’s 7th, as a Democratic victory could obstruct Trump’s legislative agenda while a Republican win would clear the path for GOP priorities. Johnson indicated the party plans aggressive action on government spending and fiscal waste, initiatives that would require House passage. The speaker characterized Democratic momentum as driven by socialist elements within the party, arguing such positions represent a fundamental threat to American governance.

Kean touted his legislative effectiveness and bipartisan record, noting he has secured bill signings from both the Biden and Trump administrations. He positioned himself as a practical legislator responsive to constituent concerns, contrasting his approach with Bennett’s alleged partisanship. Bennett’s campaign responded by highlighting her military service and arguing Kean has neglected the district while profiting from stock trades exceeding $3 million during his tenure.

The congressman was absent from Congress and public view from March through June this year while receiving treatment for depression, a period during which Bennett alleged he continued trading stocks. Upon his return, Kean introduced legislation to expand access to mental healthcare services. Johnson enlisted All-Star baseball player Mark Teixeira, himself a congressional candidate in Texas, to boost enthusiasm among GOP supporters at the New Jersey event.
