Burnham Joins European Leaders in Kyiv for Ukraine Independence Day Celebrations

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham landed in Kyiv on Monday as part of a high-level diplomatic delegation marking Ukraine’s Independence Day. The visit represents Burnham’s first international trip since assuming office and comes as he prepares to meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and participate in discussions with allied nations known as the coalition of the willing.

A roster of senior European officials converged on the Ukrainian capital for the occasion, including European Council President Antonio Costa, Moldovan President Maia Sandu, Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden, and Estonian President Alar Karis. The coordinated visit underscores the continent’s unified stance toward supporting Ukraine amid its ongoing conflict.

Burnham’s office announced that the U.K. Government will authorize defense contractor MBDA to share classified details concerning British technology components integrated into the SCALP long-range missile system. The disclosure is expected to facilitate collaborative efforts between France and Ukraine to establish domestic manufacturing capabilities for the weapon within Ukrainian territory.

The SCALP missile represents the French designation for the British-developed Storm Shadow system, with both variants incorporating dual French-British technological elements. Ukraine observed its 35th anniversary of independence on Monday, commemorating three decades since the Soviet Union’s dissolution in 1991.
